Sound Asleep: Man Unaware as Cargo Ship Grounds Just Feet from His Home

In a scene more fitting for a movie than real life, a Norwegian man awoke to find a 135-meter cargo ship grounded on his lawn—after sleeping through the entire incident. Johan Helberg, who lives in the tranquil coastal village of Byneset near Trondheim Fjord, only learned about the massive vessel outside his house when a neighbor came knocking on Thursday morning to point it out.

The neighbor, Jostein Jørgensen, who lives approximately 40 meters from the shore, was stirred from his sleep by the deep rumble of a ship approaching. Looking out the window, he was shocked to see the NCL Salten bearing down on the coastline. Realizing the danger, he ran out to warn others and saw the container ship rapidly nearing Helberg’s house before it finally came to a halt just eight meters from the wall.

Helberg later remarked that if the ship had collided with a nearby rocky outcrop, it could have been launched directly into his home, causing serious damage. Thankfully, the vessel narrowly missed any major impact. The most significant consequence was minor damage to electrical connections that powered his heating system. Still, the image of a massive ship parked on his lawn was unforgettable.

The container ship, operated by North Sea Container Line, was en route to Orkanger with 16 crew members on board when it veered off course and grounded. Bente Hetland, the company’s managing director, acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and emphasized that they were relieved no one was hurt. She added that the cause was still unknown pending further investigation.

However, early reports suggested that the officer in charge of navigation—a Ukrainian national—had fallen asleep on duty. Authorities quickly charged him with negligent operation of the vessel. Investigators are now examining whether the officer had received adequate rest, raising questions about the enforcement of maritime work-hour regulations on long shipping routes.

Efforts to remove the vessel began shortly after the grounding. A tugboat was dispatched but was unable to move the ship. A more sophisticated salvage attempt during high tide later that evening also failed. The Norwegian Coastal Administration has since stated that geotechnical analysis is necessary to determine how and when a successful refloating can be safely attempted.

While no fuel spills or oil leaks have been reported so far, the coastal authority has stationed an oil spill response ship nearby as a precaution. The incident has sparked widespread attention and humor across Norway, with locals expressing disbelief at the surreal sight. As for Helberg, the experience has left him stunned, especially considering that such a large ship managed to crash-land just meters from his bed—and he didn’t hear a thing.
